Terms of Service

These are the rules for using Ivory. Using it means you accept them. Ivory is run by one person in British Columbia, Canada, and "we" below means that person.

The short version

• Ivory is free. There is nothing to buy.
• You need to be 13 or older to make an account.
• Coins are play money. They have no cash value.
• Play fair and be decent to other players.
• It is provided as is. Do not treat your progress as a permanent record.

Who can use Ivory

Anyone can practise in Learn. To create an account you must be at least 13 years old. Ivory asks your age once at sign-up and takes your answer at face value. If you are under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian needs to agree to these terms on your behalf.

Your account

Learn works without an account. Compete needs one.

You are responsible for your account and for keeping your password to yourself. If you think someone else is using it, email hello@ivory.academy.

Pick a display name you would be happy to see on a leaderboard. Do not impersonate anyone, and do not pick something hateful, sexual or abusive. We can change or remove a name that breaks this rule.

Coins, chests and in-app items

You earn coins by playing, and you can spend them in the shop or on chests, which hold a random cosmetic item. None of it can be bought with real money. Coins, chests, items, XP and ranks cannot be traded for money or anything of value, have no cash value, and are licensed to you rather than owned. They are a score, not a currency. Nothing in Ivory is a wager, and nobody can pay for an advantage, because there is nothing to pay for.

We can change how coins are earned and spent, and we can adjust balances to fix a bug or shut down an exploit. If your account goes, your coins go with it.

Playing fair

Do not cheat. That means no scripts, bots, automated input, extra accounts, or exploiting bugs to inflate a score or a rank. We can reset scores, remove leaderboard entries, or close an account that does any of this.

Your ranked rating is calculated and written by our server, not by the app in your browser. Editing your local storage will not move it.

Leaderboards and duels may include computer-controlled opponents, especially at quiet hours when few people are online. They keep the queue moving so a duel is always available. Your own results always come from your own play.

Using the service properly

Do not attack or overload the service, try to reach other people's accounts, scrape the site wholesale, or use Ivory to harass anyone. Do not resell access to it.

What belongs to whom

Ivory's code, design, lessons and artwork are ours. You may use them through the app for your own practice. You may not copy the app or republish its content as your own.

Chord names, scales and voicings are common musical knowledge and belong to no one. Ivory does not host, stream or distribute recorded music.

Ivory's record collection names real musicians, real albums and real record labels as historical fact. Those names belong to the people and companies that own them, and none of them is connected with Ivory, has approved it, or has any involvement in it. No album artwork is used. Every sleeve in Ivory is generated by the app.

If you own a name used here and would like it removed, write to hello@ivory.academy and we will take it out.

Ivory will change

This is a work in progress. Features can be added, changed or removed, and the service can be unavailable at times. We may stop offering it entirely. If we do shut it down, we will try to give enough notice for you to export your data first.

No warranty

Ivory is provided as is and as available, with no warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. We do not promise it will be accurate, uninterrupted or free of bugs, and we do not guarantee your saved progress against loss. Cloud save settles conflicts by keeping the most recently written copy, so progress made on two devices at once can be overwritten. Treat it as practice data, not a system of record.

Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for lost data, lost progress or lost coins. Ivory is free, so our total liability to you is limited to what you have paid us, which is nothing. Some places do not allow limits like these, in which case they apply only as far as the law there permits.

Ending it

You can stop using Ivory at any time, and you can delete your account in Settings under "Your data". We can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. The sections on coins, ownership, warranties, liability and governing law survive after your account is gone.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the laws of Canada that apply there. Disputes go to the courts of British Columbia. If you are a consumer elsewhere, this does not take away rights your local law gives you.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the current version. If a change matters, we will flag it in the app. Carrying on using Ivory after a change means you accept it.
